A Colorful Birthday Party

So, we just had Jillian's first birthday party. It was fun. But if you want to know about it, you can see it on my personal blog HERE.
We're here to discuss crafty baking stuff.
So, the cake was SUPPOSE to be a 7 layered rainbow cake. Well, I stopped at 5 layers and then had to make the cake into 2 cakes (one became a three layer cake; the other became a two layered cake).
The cake was Vanilla Sponge; perfect for a little one to pick up and NOT made a huge mess.
The filling was crushed pineapple and whip cream.
And the icing... oh the icing... it was wonderful. It is literally called "the best icing I've ever had".
I will post recipes below.
One of the cakes. I used Wilton color sugar since I have TONS in my cupboards.

Beef and Peppers GOODNESS

I grew up with this meal and it remains one of my favorites.  But here is a fun little tidbit: I was a vegetarian before I got married; meat would really upset my stomach.  So generally when I parents served anything with meat, I was very good at hiding it and then dumping it.  Mom, if you're reading this: Sorry, I love you. I ate meat occasionally (who can pass up turkey dinner?)
Anyway, this was one meal that I could eat.  Beef usually made me sick after I ate it.
So here is the recipe so you can make it!!  It is very fast, very easy and it's a one dish meal; just add rice!  It's also very easy to double if you need extra.

You will need:
  • Oil to stir fry in (I use olive oil)
  • 1.5 pounds of beef cut into strips
  • dash of salt and pepper
  • 1 chopped onion
  • minced garlic to taste... maybe 1 tsp.
  • 2 peppers (I find if I use colorful veggies, my kids are more likely to eat, so tonight we used green and yellow)
  • 3 stalks of celery chopped
  • 1 beef boullion cube
  • 3/4 cup of water
  • 1 tbsp corn startch
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (or to taste)
You need to brown your beef and sprinkle it with salt and peppers.
Then add you onion, garlic, celery and peppers and stir fry that until the vegetables are tender.
While you are waiting for everything to stir fry go a head a mix you beef cube, water, corn startch and soy sauce together.
When the vegetables and beef are good, pour in the sauce and mix around to allow thickening.
And that is it. When it's thick, it's ready to go.
Serve over hot rice and enjoy!!

How About a Fast Easy Crock Pot Meal?

I know, I used this picture already... but it's a lovely shot of my crock pot!!
Pulled Pork Goodness!!
What you need:
  • 1 Pork Roast that will feed you family (I used a 2.5 pound shoulder roast)
  • 1 bottle of BBQ Sauce of your choice (I used Bulls Eye Original sauce)
What you do:
  • Put a little sauce on the bottom of you crock pot dish
  • Put roast in pot (I just put mine in frozen... but thawed would be fine too!)
  • Poured my sauce over the roast.
  • Put lid on pot.
  • Cook for 8 hours on low or 5 hours on high.  You want the roast to be falling apart when it's done.
  • Pull roast apart into pieces and serve on fresh buns (I have a killer recipe I will share soon) or hamburger buns.  You can put some sauce that the roast was cooked in on the pork too if you want.
I serve this with salad and a nice glass of milk.  I have also done this with chicken.  It is a HIT in our house and yes, it is that fast to do.  I love fast meals!!
So, go make some and let me know how it turned out!  I would love to hear what you all did to yours.

It is FINISHED!!!!

After months of working on my quilt, it is finished!!  I am so excited to have it finished and learned so much working on it.  I really enjoyed this project and can't wait to do another one.
Completely finished.  Sorry, my lighting wasn't that great tonight.

I had a couple of areas come loose, so I fixed them.  I like the little something it adds to the quilt.  I have to admit that I love things that aren't perfect.
Okay, so I had no idea what I wanted to use for the backing of my quilt.  I was really torn between minky swirl fabric, plush and flannel.  I decided to go with flannel.  I am happy with it.
So, I decided to stipple my quilt instead of hand quilting it, or sending it to a lady with a long arm machine.  I am so happy that I decided to do this.  You can find an awesome tutorial HERE on how to do free motion quilting.

Now, onto the next project!!!
